Evan Mapes, OD | Owner & Optometric Glaucoma Specialist
He is a graduate of Kansas State University and the University of Houston College of Optometry. His externships were conducted at the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand and Omni Eye Specialists of Denver, Colorado. Upon received his medical degree, Evan worked at Texas Eye Institute, Houston Eye Associates and Bayshore Eye Associates before opening Spectacles on Montrose in 1998.
His unique patient skills and experiences have earned him the “Best Eye Doctor” in Houston by local newspapers and magazines many, many years! His vision for Spectacles, his unique style, and the outstanding frame selection at Spectacles has earned “Best Place to Buy Eyewear” in Houston for 11 consecutive years. He is well-known around Houston as a leading Optometrist. He is considered a leader in specialty contact lens examination and fitting, including bifocal gas permeable contact lenses and toric lenses for severe astigmatism.
Problem solving, specialty contact lens fitting, and his unique, comprehensive patient care are why he’s considered among the best in Houston’s eye care providers. His personality makes every visit an enjoyable experience.
Dr. Mapes is available Tuesday through Saturday with evening appointments available on Wednesdays. Appointments are recommended. |
Benjamin Frausto | Office Manager & Optician
Ben also handles all of our contact lens instruction. He’s famous for his patience with first-time contact lens patients! When he’s not at Spectacles, Ben spends his quality free time bicycling with his family: Maria, daughter Heidi, and son Ben Jr.

Dr. Mapes, who insists all patients call him Evan, is a mid-western guy transplanted to Houston where he has lived his entire professional life. 
Ben has experienced over 10 years in the optical industry! He advanced to the top position of a specialty lens laboratory before joining the Spectacles team in 2007. His extensive knowledge of lens manufacturing and design are a welcome asset. If you’ve had problems in the past with any type of eyewear lens, Ben can find a solution for you! 
Victor is a graduate of Texas Tech University and joined us at Spectacles in 2010. In addition to his growing interest in the field of optometry, Victor is also a working actor and CrossFit athlete. You will see him as the lead role in the upcoming independent film “Inside Out”, which will be released December 2011. 
David has a variety of experiences which makes him an excellent addition to our team. He’s an All-American honors athlete, a psychology degree from Cleveland State Univeristy, NCAA Division 1 Team Captain, accomplished print and catalog model, and has appeared in several movies! His resume shows he has the drive to excel in all aspects of this life. . . including his exceptional skills at Spectacles. Whether it is handling the daily operations at work, finding perfect, unique eyewear for his patients, or searching the world for new eyewear manufacturers, David’s disposition keeps us all entertained!
